RIVER DEEP, MOUNTAIN HIGH

So you are fit, energetic, mountain-savvy and looking for a new challenge. Instead of heading up the mountain this summer, why not go down to the Rhone valley? Only 30 minutes away in Sion, you can plunge into the world of rafting and canyoning, led by Swiss Raft Activity.

The company has newly renovated their Sion base and is ready to provide Class 3 and 4 white water thrills on the Rhone. They will supply instruction, guide, equipment, raft and transport to the start of the adventure at Chippis or Susten. These are either half-day or whole day excursions.

If that is not intrepid enough you can try canyoning, the activity which combines potholing, rambling, climbing and mountaineering with white water. You advance, mainly on foot, along the river bed, through ravines, gorges and waterfalls but you need to swim, waterslide or abseil some sections, depending on what has to be navigated.

Again, Swiss Raft Activity will provide the technical gear. All you need to bring is a swim suit, comfortable clothing and a lot of nerve. See their website here or contact Secret Alps for info.

These activities are not confined to Action Men. There are also some family-friendly programmes on offer.
